6 questionsCanada's free-to-play NHL prediction game. Before each Canadian NHL game, you pick the player you think will score the first goal. Get it right and you earn points. Earn enough points and you win prizes.
Yes, completely free. No purchase, subscription, or payment of any kind is required. No purchase is necessary to enter or win.
No. This is not a gambling platform. You do not wager money. You pick a player, earn points based on how your pick does, and compete for prizes on a leaderboard. There is no financial stake involved.
The Tim Hortons challenge asks you to pick three scorers a day from games across the league, inside the Tims app. First Goal Contest asks for one pick per game: who scores the first goal in games involving Canadian teams.
Other games ask several questions per game or have you pick scorers from across the whole league. First Goal Contest asks one question, only for Canadian teams' games, and has no sportsbook partners, ever.
Canadian residents. You must have reached the age of majority in your province or territory (18 or 19, depending where you live). Residents of Quebec may participate subject to applicable provincial regulations. Employees, officers, directors and contractors of First Goal Contest, its affiliates and its prize sponsors, together with their immediate families, are not eligible. The Rules page is the authority on eligibility.
Making Picks
4 questionsAny NHL game featuring at least one Canadian team: Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, Vancouver Canucks, Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, or Winnipeg Jets.
At puck drop, the moment the game begins. You must submit your pick before the game starts. Late picks are not accepted.
Yes, any time before puck drop. Once the game starts and picks are locked, your selection is final.
If a game ends without a goal or is cancelled before a goal is scored, all picks for that game are voided and no points are awarded or deducted.
Points & Prizes
4 questionsThe season is split into cups: Preseason, the Fall Cup, the Holiday Cup, the Winter Cup, the 4 Nations, the Spring Cup and the Playoffs. Every cup starts at zero and ends with a winner, so you can join part way through the season and still win one. Prizes are announced before each cup opens. Your points from the four regular season cups (Fall, Holiday, Winter and Spring) add up to the Season title. The dates for each cup are on the Leaderboard page.
Picking the player who scores the first goal is 1,000 points. An assist on the first goal is 250. If your pick's team scores first, 100. If your pick plays but is not involved, 50. There is a 25% bonus when your pick is on your favourite team and a 50% bonus in an all-Canadian game; both are calculated on the base points and apply to the first three results only. Incorrect picks never cost you points.
Each cup has its own prize, named on the Leaderboard before the cup opens. Team gear and game tickets are the kinds of prizes we line up with sponsors. The winner is named when the cup ends. A cup with no prize announced before it opens has no prize.
By the cup standings when each cup closes, and by the four-cup total for the Season title. Ties go to the most recent correct call; see the Rules.
Your Account
3 questionsYes, a free one, to make picks and appear on the leaderboard. Sign up with your email address; no credit card required.
The Tonight page lists every open game and the ones coming up, and picks open the morning of each game. Text reminders are optional: turn them on in your profile and you get one text before your team plays, if you have not made your call yet. Email reminders are not switched on.
Open your profile and tap your team under Who's your team? You can pick one of the seven Canadian teams and change it whenever you like. Call one of their players and the points pay 25% more.
Sponsors
2 questionsBy the contest itself and by sponsors who want to reach hockey fans. Sponsors may contribute prizes or appear on the site. We are Canadian-owned and run from Calgary, and we do not take gambling sponsors. That keeps the contest free for everyone.
Visit the Sponsors page and ask for the one-page sheet. You'll hear back from the founder, in Calgary, within one business day.
